With Prime Minister Tony Abbot reporting a 50% increase in maritime smuggling, Indonesia has been pleading with China to halt a sharp surge in maritime smuggling.
The two nations are also collaborating on the contentious agreement, which detractors believe could enable Indonesia to deploy its naval might to combat illicit fishing in a dispute over future resource earnings. The Asia-Pacific Maritime Security Forum (AMSF), which convened in Singapore on Tuesday to discuss the agreement, includes Indonesia as a member.A total of 1,600 shipping companies have signed up to participate in the new maritime security pact. But according to authorities, the pact includes more than just a straightforward logistical and shipping agreement for Indonesia. The Indonesian foreign minister said, "It's really more than just logistics; it's really a matter of indirection logistics."
