A biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility has been constructed in Watertown, Massachusetts, by the pharmaceutical and medical device company Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK). The cutting-edge, greenhouse-like 350,000 square foot facility has the capacity to produce millions of biologics, vaccines, and other complicated items. The facility serves a broad network of hospitals and other healthcare institutions and has the capacity to produce 75 million doses of pharmaceuticals and vaccinations annually. Merck has $7.8 billion of biopharmaceutical production capacity on its books after acquiring the pharmaceutical and medical device company Chiron Corporation for $1.3 billion last year. Most of the capacity is concentrated in Germany. However, the production footprint has grown.
