Insurance companies are organized into five basic departments. The first two are the underwriting department and the marketing department. These departments develop and sell insurance products for profit. The third department, the legal department, is the referee between competing interests. Underwriting departments usually craft their own sets of endorsements and forms. Depending on the type of insurance policy, these policies may have many types of coverage. But the first two departments are responsible for determining the cost of coverage.
