The Gokyo Lake Trek is an alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek that still offers spectacular views of Everest and overnight accommodations in Namche Bazaar, the iconic town that serves as the entry point to the Khumbu Region. The trekker will still be able to see the Gokyo Lakes themselves, impressive views of icy rivers and stony, glacier debris, snow-capped mountains, and of course, the dazzling turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes themselves on the less crowded route to the lakes.

In reality, the six lakes that make up the Gokyo Lakes are located in the Gokyo Valley at elevations ranging from 4700 to 5000 meters. The region of Sagarmatha National Park includes Gokyo Valley.

The lakes are the world's most elevated freshwater lake framework and have been assigned as a Ramsar site (wetlands of global significance) and consecrated to the two Hindus and Buddhists. Lonely Planet states that "for our money, the Gokyo Valley is the most spectacular in the Khumbu" as additional evidence of this region's beauty and significance. You can visit the fifth and sixth lakes in a high alpine bowl at the base of Cho Oyu, the world's sixth-highest mountain, by spending an additional day in the Gokyo Valley.

You can expect to walk for about five hours a day, with one of the highlights being the steep climb to Gokyo RI (5,357 meters) to see Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Mount Everest. Ice ridges and Ngozumpa, Nepal's largest glacier, are also on display. If you can't walk five hours a day but still want to see Gokyo Lake's unspoiled beauty, take a helicopter tour.
